If i kept my LAPTOP (Hp compaq nx7010, 1.7GHz) and my PC (PIV 2.6GHz) on for several hours .....say 10 hours on the trot. which do u think will use up the most power

note that the LAPTOP will always be connected to the AC power and that my
PC's monitor will be turned off.

I can also set my LAPTOP to power conservation mode so that it cosumes less power by doing things like turning off the monitor.

I need to do this for downloading torrents

The laptop should draw less power. Is that laptop a Centrino platform based one? f it's a Centrino CPU, it will most probably draw less power at full load than the P4 at idle!!!

Besides, I don't think the hard drive type will matter much here, because the desktop CPU would definitely have a power hungry hard drive (7200RPM, 12V one instead of a 5400RPM or 7200RPM but 5V one)

Forget about the monitor. You can always turn off the monitor (manually or automatically, but manual turning off will draw no power, while automatic turning off will still draw about 1-5W power).

I didn't say you can turn off the screen of a laptop manually. I don't know whether they offer that feature. Anyway, you don't really have to worry about that with an LCD because they already consume a lot less power than a CRT.

 Exactly. Anyway, my monitor still has about half of its warranty left. I'd do whatever I want with it in that period. After that period expires and if the monitor fails, I'll have a ticket for an LCD. Yippie! How much I'm looking forward for that day
