I have a 40GB Maxtor Hard Disk and a 40 Wire IDE cable connecting it.
I replaced the 40 wire cable to a 80 wire cable (because of this http://www.elakiri.com/forum/showthread.php?t=57220)

After that when I try to boot my computer I get a 'Blue Screen' error and the computer re-boots. I managed to get to Safe Mode and changed the 'Transfer Mode' to PIO Only. After that the computer booted (very slowly). but when I try to set the transfer mode to 'DMA' I get the same error.
So, I replaced the old 40 Wire cable and the computer booted without problems.
The following errors ware logged in the Event Viewer when the 80 Wire cable is present.

Event ID - 11
Type - Error
Source - Disk
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk0\D.

Event ID - 5
Type - Error
Source - atapi
A parity error was detected on \Device\Ide\IdePort0.

What is the error?

if you see the cable is faulty or not supported, don't plug it in. you might endup completely damaging the HDD
all this speed you gain by changing the UDMA and other modes is not worth, if you have to pay for another hard disk.

I checked the cable. It was not damaged. But, to be absolutely sure I replaced the 80 wire cable with a new 80 wire cable. But the results are same :(
But the HDD works with my old 40 wire cable.
