24 year old Samitha Samanmali, 4th year medical undergraduate of Faculty of Medicine Colombo, Sri Lanka faced a terrible accident on the 15th of February 2008 at the BMICH premises and in a eyes blink her life changed forever…….
Due to the accident she is now suffering from a Spinal Cord crush injury at T5/T6 level, Compound skull fracture in the occiput and internal bleeding.
Samitha Samanmali is a past student of Gothami Balika Vidyalaya and she currently lives in Piliyandala. Her father has passed away in March, 1995. Her mother has also undergone a hysterectomy for uterine cancer and her sister is an A/L commerce teacher at Kotte Ananda Shasthralaya.
She underwent surgery for fixation of the spine on 19.02.2008. The medical team which performed the operation to stabilize her spine consisted of Consultant Neurosurgeons Dr. Sunil Perera and Dr. Himashi Kularatne, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons Dr. Narendra Pinto and Dr. G.L. Punchihewa and Dr. (Mrs.) Rohini Ranwala, Consultant Anaesthetist.
She will face the dilemma of undergoing a neurological surgery or a thorough rehabilitation program overseas. We are still in search of the best surgeons around the world who have successfully cured this kind of cases in the past and also for the finest rehabilitation centers around the globe.
For all of the above we will be in need of a huge financial support to give Samitha a quality assured life in the future.
Had fate not been thus cruel to her, she would have had a normal life that we all take so much for granted while curing and serving so many people in need.
