Sea, Sand and Sounds… Hikka Beach Fest 2011

Ready or not, here it comes!

The Hikkaduwa Beach Fest is back, for its fourth consecutive year… bringing out the best in drummers, DJs and food!

Truth be told, I have never been to a ‘Hikka Beach Fest’, as it is commonly known; but that doesn’t, in any way, mean I haven’t heard of this beach extravaganza. Rather, I feel I am expert on it, without even having being at it. That’s how well-known it is!

Lying 98km from metropolitan Colombo, there is only one city that can boast of some of the best surfing waves in the island. Hikkaduwa is a 2.5km stretch of beach that is packed with restaurants serving the freshest seafood, souvenir shops, star-class hotels, even cheap guest-houses, and of course sun-kissed beaches and magnificent waves. Previously associated with the cultivation of coconuts, rice and cinnamon, and the manufacture of lace and drum frames, Hikkaduwa is now a laid-back destinations that tourists tend to fall in love with.

Originating in 2008, the Hikkaduwa Beach Fest is a one-of-a-kind event that highlights the best Hikkaduwa has to offer. Initially hosted by the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotions Bureau, the Festival was a means of increasing room occupancy in the area, post its ‘high season’, which is generally between October and March. The organisers also hope to make Hikkaduwa an internationally renown party destination.

“The Hikka Beach Fest 2011 hopes to use Hikkaduwa’s own resources, and its own people, and earn for their town a name of great repute and fame,” commented Chamindra Goonewardene, the Project Director of the event.

Hikka Beach Fest 2011 truly captures the essence of Hikkaduwa – from its logo, to utilising the ‘local’ talent – bringing out its main elements, such as the fusion drummers, fire dancers and the famed ‘hikka rotti’.

This time’s event is organised by the Ruhunu Tourism Bureau and the Hikkaduwa Tourism Service Providers Association, with the support of the Hikkaduwa Urban Council and the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotions Bureau.

The three-day festival will be a cultural phenomenon, complete with drum festivals, parties and an all-day rotti festival, encompassing the whole of Galle Road.

Another unique feature is that all proceeds from Hikka 2011 will be used to develop Hikkaduwa itself. Rather than thriving on the three days of the festival, the organisers hope to use the event to build up the hype for the rest of the ‘season’ as well, by entering into long-term contracts with the sponsors, and taking this ‘fame’ above and beyond the three festival days.

The event will officially commence on Friday night, with a drum parade of over 200 drummers from the southern province. The opening act of the event will feature these 20 performers, along with the infamous Hikkaduwa Drummers.

Thereafter, the sound of the drummers will fuse with that of the four International DJs that will adorn our shores, in a fusion of the best of live music and the exquisite spinning of these disc magicians.

Saturday evening will feature the first ever Rotti festival. Anyone who has (or has not!) been to Hikkaduwa has heard or tasted its ‘rottis’. Hikka 2011 will give everyone the opportunity to experience this culinary sensation at a street festival like no other. ‘You cannot leave Hikkaduwa without trying a banana and chocolate rotti,’ I am told (or warned!).

Wind down Sunday will also satisfy your gastronomic fantasies with a whole day brunch. Breakfast food, all day long… what more could you ask for!?

In addition to these events, a host of beach sports have also been organised. Men, women and children can participate in volleyball, rugby, football, the kite festival, and building sand castles… Registrations for these events are done ‘on the spot’, so anyone can participate!

Entrance for parties and planned events are by tickets, which are now available at Harpos, Bayleaf, Commons and the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotions Bureau.

So save the date and book your holiday haunt asap…

See you there!
