The Hikkaduwa Beach Fest is back, for its fourth consecutive year… bringing out the best in drummers, DJs and food! Truth be told, I have never been to a ‘Hikka Beach Fest’, as it is commonly known; but that doesn’t, in any way, mean I haven’t heard of this beach extravaganza. Rather, I feel I am expert on it, without even having being at it. That’s how well-known it is! Lying 98km from metropolitan Colombo, there is only one city that can boast of some of the best surfing waves in the island. Hikkaduwa is a 2.5km stretch of beach that is packed with restaurants serving the freshest seafood, souvenir shops, star-class hotels, even cheap guest-houses, and of course sun-kissed beaches and magnificent waves. Previously associated with the cultivation of coconuts, rice and cinnamon, and the manufacture of lace and drum frames, Hikkaduwa is now a laid-back destinations that tourists tend to fall in love with. Originating in 2008, the Hikkaduwa Beach Fest is a one-of-a-kind event that highlights the best Hikkaduwa has to offer. Initially hosted by the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotions Bureau, the Festival was a means of increasing room occupancy in the area, post its ‘high season’, which is generally between October and March. The organisers also hope to make Hikkaduwa an internationally renown party destination. “The Hikka Beach Fest 2011 hopes to use Hikkaduwa’s own resources, and its own people, and earn for their town a name of great repute and fame,” commented Chamindra Goonewardene, the Project Director of the event. Hikka Beach Fest 2011 truly captures the essence of Hikkaduwa – from its logo, to utilising the ‘local’ talent – bringing out its main elements, such as the fusion drummers, fire dancers and the famed ‘hikka rotti’. This time’s event is organised by the Ruhunu Tourism Bureau and the Hikkaduwa Tourism Service Providers Association, with the support of the Hikkaduwa Urban Council and the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotions Bureau. The three-day festival will be a cultural phenomenon, complete with drum festivals, parties and an all-day rotti festival, encompassing the whole of Galle Road. Another unique feature is that all proceeds from Hikka 2011 will be used to develop Hikkaduwa itself. Rather than thriving on the three days of the festival, the organisers hope to use the event to build up the hype for the rest of the ‘season’ as well, by entering into long-term contracts with the sponsors, and taking this ‘fame’ above and beyond the three festival days.
