You need to be a real geek to have value in such things, back in the day people studying for cisco CCIE used to buy shit from ebay and setup the lab to practice.

But in practice, no point of running servers inside your house due to the power consumption. Might be cheaper to use cloud resources.

1. our electricity price is high.
2. we dont have disposable money to spend.

they use old servers which use lot of electricity.

I just use a NAS with two drives I got off ebay. It supports stuff like plex etc. But just use it to backup documents.I was able to get down two WD red drives for a cheap price.
