Three Chinese working in a road project in Ampara were sentenced to three year imprisonment by the Ampara Magistrate last Thursday, for removing soil from a state land.
Magistrate Sampath Hewawasam also issued warrant to arrest the Chinese men.They had removed some 2000 Cubes of earth, worth about Rs. 420,000 illegally from state land in Miriswatta, Eggaloya in Damana area.
In June, 2008, the two Chinese suspects were taken into custody by a group of forest officers while engaging in removing soil from the state land. Later another Chinese national had arrived and forcibly taken away those arrested persons interrupting the duty of the forest officers.
Later police arrested these three Chinese nationals and produced before the Ampara Magistrate Court; where they were released on personal bail of Rs. 20, 000 each.
Police have launched an investigation to arrest these Chinese suspects.
