MeGUI - High Quality Converting

Note: I am not the owner of this tutorial

Here you will find a tutorial how to convert with MeGUI. It is mainly about how to reach a smaller file size without a visible loss of quality. Here you will get to know the way how I convert my uploads. This is the way Gamestar and Medji encoded their DBZ Remastered Episodesby the wy (I will mention their settings ad the bottom)

So here we go.
Software you need:

First of all I will list up what software you need to do the honourable job of good encoding.

1. AviSynth 2.5.7
Code:
http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?group_id=57023&use_mirror=superb-west&filename=Avisynth_257.exe&3029506
2. Mkvtoolnix 2.1.0
Code:
http://bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/win32/mkvtoolnix-unicode-2.1.0-setup.exe
3. Nero AAC Codec 1.1.34.2
Code:
http://www.nero.com/enu/down-ndaudio.html
NOTE: Needed for audio encoding. Not necessarily needed to encode audio as you can encode audio in other formats like MP3, but I will be using Nero AAC as my audio codec in this tutorial, so your best bet is to download this if you don't know what your doing.
Once downloaded, extract the contents of the win32 folder to C:\Program Files\megui\tools\neroaacenc\

4. Megui 0.2.6.1041
Code:
http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?group_id=156112&use_mirror=easynews&filename=megui-0.2.6.1041.exe&54221442

After you downloaded all this, install all ff them.
Then open MeGUI for the first time. You should see this:

1-mkvtut_part1_open_megui.jpg

It won't take long and MeGUI will ask you if you want to update. Sure you will do this, cause we want to work with the newest technique availabl, won't we?

Then you will get a bunch of messages that ask you what profiles you want to import. Select all of them (CTRL or SHIFT will help you).
After this MeGUI wants to restart. So press the OK button and MeGUI should do that automatically.

Now MeGUI is started right for the first time, the first thing you have to change in the settings is the path of the Nero AAC-Audio Codec. So you got to "Options" --> "Settings" --> "Program Paths" --> "Audio".
You will see this picture:
1-mkvtut_part1_neroaac.jpg

As you can see the path for "neroAacEnc" isn't right. So just press the button "..." behind the wrong path and browse to the right one (if you aren't sure anymore just look above at the programm list, I wrote there where you should unzip the NeroCodec to).
After you have done so just click on "Save".

Now you have to tell MeGUI what you want it to do (or better: wich file to convert in wich way). To do so you have to create a AviSynthScript (AVS). This is a script wich tells the converter in it's own language what to do. But don't be scared, you don't need to type in complicated codes. MeGUI has an interface included where you can change the settings fast and easy. To reach this interface got to "Tools" --> "Avisynth Script Creator".

Then you should see this:
1-mkvtut_part3_default_avisynth.jpg

Now click the "..."-Button behind "Video Input" and browse for the video file you want to be converted. When you have found it, select it and press the button that says "Open".

When you have done that a screen that shows your selected video will pop up. You can close it by pressing the red "x" in the right upper corner.

Normally you won't do anything to the preselected settings. But you have to check mark the field "Clever (TM) anamorphic encoding". Don't do anything to theoptions that are displayed when you have done so. This is an important step because otherwise the video format of your file will be changed and won't look good anymore.

Then you change the mask to "Filters" and will see this:
1-mkvtut_part3_default_filter.jpg

The first part you see is "Deinterlacing". If you don't know the source type of the Deinterlacing you have to analyse it. Therefore click the button that says "Analyse..." .This will take up to a minute, but it mainly depends on your processor speed.

There isn't much to do after you have analysed your source file. If your source is an anime, then check the field that says "Source is Anime (isn't detected automatically)".

Don't change anything in the the field "Filters", just check the field that says "Noise Filter". Don't do anything else.
If your source file is in mpeg-format, then check all the options in the field "Mpeg Options".

So this was it. To preview the result of your settings press the button "Preview AVS Script" .

Then press the button "Save".

Congratulations, you now have created the AVS-Script you need for encoding.

After you pressed the Save-button, you should see something like this:

1-mkvtut_part3_avisynth_done.jpg

Make sure, that the codec that is selected is x264. The fileformat doesn't really matter so leave it at MP4

Now you have to choose a video profile. It dosn't really matter which one you take, 'cause you will change the settings now anyway.
So after you have chosen one press the button "Config" behind it.

Now you see this:
1-mkvtut_part4_video_profile_default.jpg

Most of these options doesn't matter for you. But you have to change a few settings:

Change the "Mode" to "Automated 2pass" and check the field that says "Turbo".

You have to choose a bitrate either. Set it to 310 when you want a video of 20 minutes to have a filesize of ca. 50MB. The bitrate is what decides the filesize and quality at the end. One tip: for cartoons or animes you can choose a lower bitrate then for liveaction series or movies.

Then set "Deblocking Strenght" and "Deblocking Threshold" to "1" .

Now you can create a new profile by pressing the "New" button at the bottom of the page. Name it whatever you want :).

So you can use this settings for all the files you want to encode in this way and don't have to set everything new.

This was it for this options field.

Go on to "Zones". I won't tell you something about this here, but there you can set a start and a end frame for your track (if you want to cut out intros and outros).

Then you go on to the options field "RC and ME". You will see this:
1-mkvtut_part4_video_profile_rcandme.jpg

Change the settings that are different to the one on this screenshot to the ones you see on the screenshot. Sorry, but I can't explain which option changes what in the output source, but these are the settings where I get the best results with.

Do the same with the option field "Advanced":
1-mkvtut_part4_video_profile_advanced.jpg

Now click on the button "Update" at the bottom of the page to update the settings of your newly created profile.

Then press the button "OK".

You're back at the original MeGUI mask. Click on the button "Enqueue" at the option field "Video encoding". Go to the Tab "Queue" and press the button "Start".

Now MeGUI will do it's work. Depending on your hardware a 20 minute episode will take 30 minutes to 45 minutes.

When the video enconding is finished clear the queue by clicking on the button "Clear" and go back to the tab "Input".

Now you have to encode the audio stream of your source file. Therefore you look at the options field "Audio encoding". What comes now is nearly the same as you have done for the video encoding:

You choose the input file (the same as your innput video file), choose a audio profile and press the button "Config".

Choose the settings as you see on this screenshot:
1-mkvtut_part4_audio_profile_done.jpg

Make sure you choose "Adaptive Bitrate"and set it to 32kbit (thisis enough for normal computer speakers).

As before you create a new profile and name it as you want.

The click "OK".

Leave the other settings as default and press "Enqueue", go to the tab "Queue" and press "Start".

Don't worry, it won't take as long as the video encoding did, normally it takes about 1 minute.

When it has finished encoding you can close MeGUI.

Now you open Mkvmerge, which you should have installed as it is in the software list I mentioned at the beginning. At the startup you will see this mask:
1-mkvtut_part5_mkvmerge_default.jpg

Press the button "add" and add the converted video and audio file. Name the audio stream in the language it is. Of course you can add more than one audio file as the output will be .mkv. Then you press "Start muxing". After another 20 seconds you should have yor perfectly converted Video file with one or more audio streams.

Gamestar's and Medji's Settings for the DBZ Remastered Episodes:

Video Bitrate: 268 kbit/s

Audio Bitrate: 32 kbit/s (for all the audio tracks)

The rest of the settings is exactly the same as it is described in this tutorial.

secondly i have been trying this and its been taking too long as compared to what you said 20 to 45 min. for 20min. CLIP.

What you say, A C2D 2.0GHz with 2GB RAM System - Does it should take that much time?

Thanks anyways for the nice tutorial, just post in the pics.
That will be Great.
