HP Enterprise Services today announced TOPS Friendly Markets LLC, the New York-based supermarket chain with stores in New York and Pennsylvania, has signed a seven-year applications and infrastructure technology services contract valued in excess of $80 million that gives the retailer flexibility to transform its business processes to drive growth.
With the new service, patients taking a range of medication manufactured by May & Baker Nigeria PLC and the KAMA Group of Ghana can send a free text message to get an instant response as to whether the tablets or syrup bottles they received are genuine.
HP HP3-027 and African social enterprise mPedigree Network have introduced a potentially life-saving service that targets counterfeit pharmaceuticals by enabling people in Nigeria and Ghana to easily check the authenticity of their malaria medication.
The system from HP and mPedigree assigns a code that is revealed by scratching off a coating on the drugs' packaging. This code can be text messaged by the consumer or medical professional to a free SMS (short message service) number to verify the authenticity of the drug.
With this agreement, HP will continue to provide a full suite of applications management via a multitiered platform, including mainframe, midrange server and web hosting in support of TOPS' business. Counterfeit medicines often contain the wrong quantity of active pharmaceutical ingredients, which can result in illness or death.
Retailers like TOPS must be able to adapt quickly to changing business needs while supporting growth and innovation. HP has been a trusted advisor to TOPS over the years and with these new services HP will help TOPS make its processes more efficient, streamline costs and position itself for future growth.
The supermarket segment's competitive nature requires us to be flexible and instantly meet time-sensitive customers' dynamic needs as well as compliance requirements. HP will help us transform our processes and applications environment so we can stock our shelves with the products customers demand while lowering costs and maintaining our neighborhood grocer feel.
The agreement also includes a number of infrastructure management services that will simplify the TOPS technology environment. HP will continue providing managed mainframe and server management services to host systems that operate TOPS' major retail operations. TOPS also will use leveraged services for remote network monitoring and management support from HP.
HP HP3-027 will provide applications management services to maintain the TOPS environment, including its retail, supply chain, marketing and merchandising applications. These services help TOPS gain control over applications and enable flexibility to adapt to new opportunities.
HP Workplace Services will support email, desktop and mobile devices, including service desk and site support services for TOPS' business offices. HP also will provide virus protection and packaging images for devices in 132 stores and pharmacies.
In addition to managing the environment from TOPS sites, HP will provide day-to-day operational support from HP Best Shore global delivery centers. These centers provide flexible and scalable service delivery using standardized processes while leveraging best practices to lower global risk and more cost-effectively support business.
If the drug packaging contains a counterfeit code, the consumer will receive a message alerting them that the pack may be a fake, as well as a phone number to report the incident. Pharmaceutical safety regulators in Ghana and Nigeria are working to ensure that the concerns of users are promptly addressed.
