The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) - the cancer arm of the WHO - recently indicated that aspartame will likely be declared a “possible carcinogen to humans.”
The FDA recommends a daily intake of 50 mg/kg, whereas European regulatory bodies recommend 40 mg/kg for aspartame for both adults and children. Throughout the world, aspartame can be found in over 6,000 products, including food and beverages, cough drops, and some toothpaste, thus indicating the ubiquitous nature of this chemical in many everyday items.
Although most food and drink products with aspartame are advertised as ‘healthy’ or ‘diet’ alternatives to sugar-sweetened products, the ability of these products to reduce the risk of diabetes or obesity has never been confirmed. Instead, evidence suggests that the flavor of both sugar- and artificially sweetened-beverages increases hunger sensations and, as a result, causes weight gain.
In the liver, Aspartame is first oxidized to formaldehyde then again to formic acid. In addition to the direct damage methanol causes to the liver, formaldehyde is also directly toxic to liver cells and associated with cancer-causing properties.
It's said that diet soft-drink manufacturers might now resort to Sucralose (Splenda). But again there are concerns, that this also leads to increased desire of hunger and also there are issues with baking products, because heating Sucralose with glycerol, a compound found in fat molecules, produce harmful substances called chloropropanols which are carcinogenic.
Have to wait and see how the IARC categorizes aspartame.
PS: On Friday Shares in Baolingbao Biology Co. and Shandong Sanyuan Biotechnology Co., which make natural sweetener erythritol jumped by at least 10% each. Anhui Jinhe Industrial Co., a producer of additives including sucralose gained 9.8%, while Shandong Kaisheng New Materials Co., which uses a raw material used in its production, advanced 15%.
