An attempt to illegally transfer thousands of police officers of various grades when a presidential election has been announced has been stopped by the mediation of the IGP. Already, a large number of illegal transfers have been carried out in the Department of Police but all transfers that were to be carried out after the announcement of the presidential election have been cancelled. Most of the urgent transfers in the Department of Police have been carried out without the sanction of the IGP but on orders from the Secretary to the Ministry of Law and Order Mahinda Balasooriya with the signature of the Director of Personnel Division. It had been revealed earlier that Mr. Mahinda Balasooriya’s appointment as the Secretary to the Ministry of Law and Order was to make manipulations in the Department of Police in favour of Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa at the presidential election. He retired from police service taking the responsibility of the shooting of a Free Trade Zone employee at a peaceful demonstration. However, he was appointed an ambassador by the Mahinda Rajapaksa government to the UAE.
