IGP transfers M'kuliya police cops Sunday, 04 July 2010 14:51
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mahinda Balasuriya has transferred the OIC of the Mattakuliya police station and his police officers pending an inquiry over the tense situation which arose in Mattakuliya since yesterday.

A statement from the Police Headquarters said that the Colombo North SSP and SP have also been transferred. The IGP says disciplinary action will be taken against the officers if it is proved that they acted against the law.

The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD), Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) are conducting separate inquiries into the incident.

Nearly 200 people have been questioned over the incident while 25 others have been arrested, IGP Balasuriya said. (SD)

Mattakuliya tense again

A tense situation continued to prevail in the Mattakuliya area today after 20 suspects were taken into custody over the clash with the police last night with residents claiming that the police had now resorted to taking revenge.

A mob surrounded the Mattakuliya police station last night to vent their anger after a drug dealer in the area who was arrested ended up in hospital with injuries to his arm sustained while in police custody.

Residents in the area claimed that the police arrested several youth who were not involved in last night’s incident. They also charged that their property was damaged by the army and the police early this morning.

However police spokesman S.P Priyashantha Jayakody denied the allegations saying the police or the army have no reason to damage the property of the area residents. “We sent several teams to bring the situation under control with the help of the army”, he said.

On receiving information that the drug dealer who was arrested yesterday was injured while in police custody, residents of the area had attempted to attack the police station with clubs, iron bars and stones last night, the police said.

The police claimed the youth sustained injuries when he attempted to break a glass inside the police station.
