I took this picture two years ago at the National Hospital of Colombo ward no 44. This man got admitted to the hospital not being able to walk with both legs swollen, you will notice it if you zoom the picture a little. This man peed on bed twice simply because he was not fit enough to walk all the way to the toilet which is in the next ward (ward 43). Shortly after the doctors visited him the nurses sent him out of the ward and ordered him to sleep on the floor beside an open window area, fully aware about his condition.
This was the time that my Dad got admitted to the same ward with a small wound on his toe. On the second day he went under a minor surgery to get the wound washed (although the doctors said that it was a minor surgery the incision was quite deep) And the doctor prescribed Betadine to wash his wound every morning and the doctors were suppose to monitor his wound to see if the medicine is working or not, but the doctors failed us right royally!! Not a single doctor came to monitor my dads wound for 3 days!! Now you may wonder why? Yes every single doctor in this ward went on a 3 day strike. But by the time they came to the ward after sorting out their other interests it was a little too late.. My dad has got an allergy on Betadine but the nurse didn't give a Rats Ass about it coz the prescription in the file says to use 'Betadine'. Coz of their carelessness they couldn't heal his wound and he lost his leg below the knee and this led into so many other complications like gastritis coz they he had to fast and wait the whole day until they leisurely took him to the operation theatre.
Finally I had to get him discharged on request coz they couldn't manage to get the wound healed even after the amputation, and then I took him to Doctor Nalaka Gunawansa at Nawaloka, there we were told that the wound has got infected coz the doctors/ surgeons have not dressed the wound properly and had to do another wound wash on Christmas Eve 2015.
With all that what he went through he managed to survive an year with us spending most of the time on bed.
He might have lived for another couple of years more
IF those doctors never went on a strike for '3' days.
IF there were enough surgeons and doctors in the hospital/country.
IF they were not ignorant dimwits who selfishly think only about their cause.
End of the day we pay for their FREE education WE empty our pockets by paying tax to support those scumbags to study for 4 to 5 years all FOC.
It is so disappointing these doctors putting poor people's lives into risk. It is disappointing to see 3A Bio students acting like billy/nanny goats shamelessly on streets and slums tying hand bands instead of going to campus funded by our money
