Jan 08, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) is divided over the Tamil party's support for General Sarath Fonseka and its student union has decided to support President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the forthcoming presidential election.

"We can't agree with Tamil MPs' conditions which will obviously create a separate state in Sri Lanka," convener of the JVP student union Inter University Student Federation (Anthar Vishwa Vidyala Sishya bala Mandalaya), Udul Premaratne said.

Opposition Candidate Sarath Fonseka has signed a confidential agreement with the Tamil National Alliance, which was once considered as a LTTE proxy party, and secured the Tamil MPs' support for his candidature at the January 26th presidential election.

General Fonseka has reportedly agreed to merge Northern and Eastern Provinces and remove the high security zones in the respective regions.

"Most dangerous condition is to release all the LTTE suspects in government custody," he added.

Premaratne said that from the inception the JVP has fought against Pro-LTTE political policies and they are not willing to betray the party policies for cheap political gains.

"Therefore we, the student union of JVP is going to support for President Rajapaksa even though our party is going to support Fonseka at this election," he said.
