Is there a way to stream http links?

I;ve seen the adobe flash player 9 streaming mpg files direct from the server ...i got to now this because when i didnt hav flash player 9 installed the the video started to download it was a http link im sure that the player can do it but i dont know how to use adobe player to play a file if someone knows how post here
