As per our knowledge, this model of democracy has been adopted in an era where communication facilities were minimal. Therefore, a set of population representatives were appointed to take decisions on behalf of the whole population.
However, in an era where communication technology has boomed in a massive scale, it is felt that this model is obsolete.
Shouldn't we reach for population opinion more often?

IMO, voting rights should be given to people after a IQ and general knowledge test. Else they just vote based on favors, money, mis-information, etc.
