BAs come from various academic backgrounds including business, engineering, management, and even psychology.
BAs fill the gap between the engineering team and the customers. So they should have excellent communication skills wrapped with attention to detail and a basic understanding of both technical and business domains.

Most of the times experience. Much better if you have a degree qualification which is a combination of Business + IT like Business Information Systems. But it's not mandatory. There are professional certifications as well from IIBA https://www.iiba.org/business-analysis-certifications/iiba-certifications but these you can get after some time of experience on the job.
