62nd Encounter kicks off on dis saturday at reid avenue

Itz Bradby time once again. Da talking point is on Royal n Trinity n how dey would perform @ dis all important encounter. Unlike in da past dis year’s count more dan da “Bradby plum alone”. Da winners of dis game will be in a higher plane next year while da other will languish in da “B” division for anther whole season. All three top teams in da division “B” Isipathana, Royal n Trinity r having equal chances for their promotion to da top league nxt year.:nerd:

In da pst on so many occasions, da team, which is weaker, has ended up turning tables.;) Intriguingly dis year both sidez r equally balanced withs ome more hardy forwards n r set on a mission to hold on or to capture da custody of their cherished shield. Da first leg of dis Brdaby encounter will be also a tournrmrnt game. But dis year is a special one for da “Lions” as dey celebrat9ing 100 years of rugby n dis will be n ideal opportunity to finish their season on a winning note cemented with a promotion to da top division.:nerd:

D match will be on September 9th @ da Royal College Rugby Grounds n following schedule for da games

    Under 12 -2:15 pm
    Under 14- 2:40 pm
    Under 16-3:00 pm
    Under 18- 3:45 pm
    Under 20- 4:45 pm

Bradby wz on offer for da first time in 1945 when one of da Royal Principal’s EL Bradby (1939-1945) offered da trophy. Meanwhile Trinity wz administrated by CE Simathiarachchci offered for the under -17 trophy. In da initial game Royal wz led by DL Fernando n da Trinitians wewre under RG Sourjah. Thiugh Royal won da initial leg 3-Nil Trinity came back strongley to take da Bradby when dey beat da Reid Avenue Skool 6-NIL in da second leg.

Trinity enjoyed da best siris of wins from 1952-57 when dey won da Bradby on 6 consecutive years. Royal’s best sieris of win were from 2001-2004 wining 4 years in-a-row. Da 100th encounter between da two skools wz played in 1983 in which Ashan Ratwatte led Trinity n Royal was led by Sriyan Cooray. Trinity won 20-16 aggeregate in dis centenary encounter.

Only once in da history of Bradby Sheild has both gamez ended on equlal points. In 1992 da first leg ended in a nil-all drawn even da second leg too dead locked 3 points a piece. Himesh Gumatilake led da “Lions” n Harindu Wijesinghe led da Reid Avenue Skool.:baffled:

Royalz best victory in da sieris waz in 2002 when dey outclassed their foes in a two match seiris by 83 points to nil. Zulki Hameed led Royal led da Royal outfit in dat year. Da “Lions” hit back strongley after 4 years wait in da in 2005 when dey simply outclassed by n outplayed Royal in da all departments to aggreagate 69 points to 13. Trinity wz led by BNR Fernando with playmaker Pushpakumara bein da architect behind their victory. Dis tiny scrum-half will be remembered by da rugby lovers for many years as he looked a carbon copy of Michael Jayasekara (present Vice President –SLRFU)

Trinity under national youth player Imalka Maddumapatabendi opened da 2006 season with a warm up against St.Sylvestor’s beating them 21-7. Nxt dey beat Army SC also in a warm up @ 20-14. Their preparation for da centenary game against Kingswood wz hampered when St.Peter’s pulled out from their annual encounter without a valid reason. :dull: Though the lost to da defending league championz Kingswood 10-16 they crossed their opponents line on no less than two occasions. Da major setback for Trinity in dis game wz place kicking, which cost them many a point dat should hav come their way. In their nxt encounter they retained da Canon De Saram trophy when dey beat Thomians 12-NIL. Tjen they ended da 7 year hoo-doo by beating da Katugasthota St. Anthony’s convincingly 25 -13. While particitipating in da “B” division they recorded da highest points for da season when dey rampaged 112-3 win ovr a shell chocke science college n continued their good form by inflicting Joes 38-20, Vidyartha 34-3 n Rajans 36-NIL.

Da Royal out fil enjoyed a consistent year of rugby diz season. Dey r led by nippy scrum half Chamika Sandaruwan. Dey opened the season against St.Peter’s in a friendly encounter beating dem 13-6. then they followed it up with convincing win over Science College 41-Nil St.Joseph’s 39-nil Vidyartha 31-7 n Dharmaraja 37-12. Finaly they met thir waterloo in their tussle against Isipathana in their own back yard by crashing to a 22-7 defeat. And thus lost da custody of Maj Milroy Fernando Trophy. Without any dobiut da finds of da season are da hooker Bilal Hassen n crack n dynamite number 8 Diran Warnakulasuriya who hav out fought their opponents time n again.
