ඉංග්රීසි නිසා තේරෙයිද මන්ද?? Today is Wesak Poya Day, the day Buddhists all over the world accept as the day in which Lord Buddha’s Birth, Enlightenment and Nirvana took place. This day is commemorated, venerated and honoured by all Buddhists. Lord Buddha’s teachings that help the society to progress include cooperation, working for reconciliation and righteousness. Undoubtedly, most of the virtuous qualities that exist in the Sri Lankan society have been nurtured by His teachings. When these teachings were followed Sri Lanka was known as ‘Dharmadweepa’. However, at present Sri Lanka is being made an island of crime. The number of crimes that are committed on a day that begins and ends with Buddhist teaching is escalating day by day. Buddhist teaching vividly shows that large arsenals of weapons exist and crime escalates in a country when people in that country are economically ruined. Sri Lanka becoming an island of crime cannot be prevented if the rulers deceive masses saying they protect Lord Buddha’s teaching but in reality is making liquor, gambling and prostitution its economic strategy and is developing an immoral economy instead of developing the economy of the country and bringing a halt for the escalating crime. In such an environment, the genuine Buddhists should endeavour to change the society so that the immoral economic, cultural and political erosion could be ended and their lives could be nurtured according to the teaching of Lord Buddha. Anura Dissanayaka Leader, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna
