VP cracks further; Anjan Umma goes independent
By Rathindra Kuruwita and Jayashika Padmasiri
The dissention within the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) surfaced once again when its Gampaha District Parliamentarian Ms. A.R Anjan Umma told Parliament police that she would act as an independent MP in Parliament. She also told the Parliamentary Police to provide protection.
Although many believe that this is yet another indication of the bitter internal strife within the party Vijitha Herath, JVP propaganda Secretary told The Bottom Line that the party is not worried about Anjan Umma’s actions. “She said she will act independently, but this does not mean that she has left the party,” he said. He added that they will not take any action against the dissenting MP.
“No she did not inform us about her decision and there is no need for that,” Vijitha Herath, JVP propaganda Secretary said. Commenting on whether the party will take action against Anjan Umma he said that as a MP, she has the right to take decisions regarding her allegiance and that they will not take any action against her.
Meanwhile JVP propaganda Secretary denied the allegation that Anuruddha Polgampola, Kegalle district JVP MP had obstructed Anjan Umma when she was making her statement to the Parliamentary Police.
“Nothing of that sort of thing happened. He only inquired what was wrong,’ he said. “Polgampola did not disturb her or obstruct her in any way,” he added. “This is a slander spread by those who bear grudges against the JVP,’ Herath said.
