JVP Dissidents form new Party on 14th May.
JVP Dissidents led by MPs Wimal Weerawansa and Nandana Gunatilaka form a new political Party named National Freedom Front and intend seeking registration with Elections Commissioner.
Before making his exit from the party Weerawansa the charismatic and active Propaganda Secretary of Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, made a statement in Parliament on his views of the political struggle within the ranks of the JVP.
Prior to Weerawnsa’s dissent Nandana Gunatilaka left the JVP and sat among Government ranks. In an emotional speech in parliament on 8th May Weerawansa related how indifferently he had been treated by the party leadership in spite of his dedication to the party which he had joined as a student even foregoing opportunities for an academic career. In strong terms he stated that one could stand attacks from external elements but not from within.
Nandana Gunatilaka and Wimal Weerawansa have not attended JVP Ex.Committee meetings for some time and have not been invited to attend either. Gunatilaka and Weerawansa and their loyalists defend the stand they have taken to form a new Front.
This new Front is named National Freedom Front having as its symbol the Crown and symbolic colour is Gold.
Incidentally the inauguration fixed for 14th May coincides with the 43rd anniversary of the JVP formed under the leadership of Rohana Wijeweera on 14th May over three decades ago.
Weerawansa is also the livewire behind Manel-mal (Blue Lotus) Campaign in support of war heroes.
