Colleagues say two opposition activists in Sri Lanka were abducted and have been detained illegally by the military since last week.

The media secretary for the Movement for People's Struggle said the two members were abducted Friday in the northern Jaffna district of the country's former civil war zone.

Military spokesman Brig. Nihal Hapuarachchi rejected the allegation and said there is no any military involvement in this abduction.

Waruna Rajapakshe said his two colleagues at the time of their abduction were engaged in organizing a media conference for their movement to protest against rights violations.

He identified the missing activists as 29-year-old Lalith Kumar Weeraraju and 34-year-old Kugan Muruganandan.
