Last minute try enables Navy to hold CR&FC
Giant killers Navy Sports Club came from behind to level scores against CR & FC at 18 all in their Caltex Inter Club Rugby encounter at Longdon Place on Saturday. CR & FC scored through 2 Tries, 1 Conversion, 2 Penalty) to Navy SC’s 3 Tries and 1 Penalty. At the short breather it was the Home team who led by 10 points to nothing.
Both teams played far below expectations. CR & FC forwards got the better of their opposite numbers. Navy never got the chance of working their three quarters. On the other hand CR & FC nippy scrum half Srinath Sooriyabandara looked threatening with some ghosting moves. He worked the line at every given opportunity. In the forwards play for CR & FC it was Ishan Noor and Shara Fernando who were outstanding.
Navy SC who settled and re-grouped in the second half played good running rugby. In the loose Navy stood out with some lightning fast work by their forwards. Their flankers Danushka Perera and skipper and flanker Yoshitha Rajapaksa were outstanding. In three quarter movements it was Navy winger Chula Susantha who stood out with some dashing runs down the wing.
CR & FC’s full back Reza Mubarak missed two kickable penalties in the first and 14th minute of the game. Red Shirts drew first blood in the 21st minute when Reza Mubarak was on target with a kick at goal. Havelocks down Air force
Havelocks are making a name for themselves this rugby season and with another excellent performance to defeat a power packed Air Force team by 22 points (2 goals, a try, a penalty) to 13 (a goal, a try) in their Caltex Rugby League fixture at Havelock Park on Sunday. Havelocks scored all their points in the first half to take a comprehensive 22-3 lead at the lemons.
Air Force fought back in the second half to score ten more points through two tries. Centre Anuruddha Vilwara, captain Kavinda Jayasena and Atelia scored a try each for the winners. Atelia also made the three conversions. Winger Charith Seneviratne and Kurakulasuriya scored a try each for Airmen and Seneviratne also put over the penalty.
Police power their way to victory
Police mean business this year. After having beaten CR & FC last week they evolved another superlative display of power and open rugby to beat CH & FC by 17 points (1 goal, 2 tries) to 13 (2 tries, a penalty) in their Caltex Rugby League encounter at Maitland Crescent on Sunday. Dominating play almost throughout the game, Police made inroads through their hard running forwards and backs and brought about some spectacular tackles to thwart CH from making much headway.
Police opened scoring in almost the second minute when center Ranjith Kumara intercepted a long pass midfield and darted untouched to score under the post. Surprisingly Priyantha Ekanayake (not the former Sri Lanka captain) failed with the conversion. They scored again in the fifth minute when they won a line out just three meters out and the forwards barged through with the ball in the hands of Malith Hettiarachchi.
CH made a break and went into the Police territory and with center Shafeek Jayah making the break in a constructive move, sent winger Lakala Perera over by the corner flag in the 12th minute. Four minutes later, Police increased on the lead when they forced another line out and their skipper and flanker T. D. Seneviratne had the ball in hand when the forwards forced their way through. This try was converted by Ekanayake and Police led 17-5.
Police could not rest on this lead as it was still only in the first half. CH once against made a break and from a three quarter move winger Lakala Perera went over for a try. The game continued to be a tight affair with the defense of both sides taking center stage. There was very little room for either side making any break-through in the second half.
The foreign players of CH just could not do anything constructive as they were marked closely and often CH were unlucky too with the ball spilling off their grasp at crucial moments with a certain try staring at them. Only CH managed to score off a penalty in this half when an infringement in a loose maul saw Indika Wickremanayake kicking right to give CH a slender deficit of four points.
