in sri lanka among buddhist priests ( SL is a therawada buddhism country) there three main "Nikaya" ( groups) depending on their origin (how & from which country they were established here)
1. amarapura nikaya
2. raamangna nikaya
3 siyam nikaya
of that siyam nikaya is responsible for the protection of the sacred relic tooth in kandy maligawa. this siyam nikaya then again divided in two chapters ie. malwathu and asgiri. this is because from early kings days one temple take care of the tooth relic for one year and then the other temple the next year.these two temples are closeby
So each these four units has a leader who is chosen by the priest committee like group comprising senior priests in-charge of dhamma and vinaya( ethics)
the priests who become leader of these groups will be called "maha nayaka" thero. and to be this kind of leaders, they must be senior enough ( descend from a deserved "GURUKULAYA", well educated and dedicated, very calm with deep knowledge in dhamma and vinaya as well as well social recognition and no any form of accusations against them. usually if you would have a chance to meet these noble priest you would realize how superior them! simply they are full with good norms and behavior! in sinhala " uthum gathiguna thibena sedehewath haamuduruwo thamai me wage nayakathwayan lebenne!"
