Defending champions Kandy Sports Club is heading the points table after the third week-end’s matches of the Caltex ‘A’ division league rugby tournament having obtained 13.50 points from their three matches.

The lads from Kandy scored a convincing 36-9 win over Sri Lanka Police on Sunday at Nittawela helped by the individual brilliance of Sri Lanka Sevens skipper Pradeep Liyanage and dashing Sri Lanka winger Sanjeeva Jayasinghe who scored two tries each to give the hill capital club their third successive win for the season.

Runners up of the ‘A’ division league for the last four years and reigning President’s Trophy champions CR and FC remain in second position by also collecting 13.50 points in three outings. The Red Shirts scored a resounding 46-21 win over Sri Lanka Army on Friday with a dazzling display of open rugby.

Sri Lanka flanker Kasun de Silva who played a key role in their success had the honour of scoring two out of the seven tries scored by CR.

Havelocks Sports Club too kept their unbeaten record intact with a hard fought 24-20 win over a gallant Air Force outfit at Ratmalana on Saturday. Fly half Samantha Lakshan was the match winner for the park club by converting all three tries and putting over a penalty.

He also played a vital role in their success over Army a fortnight ago when he fired across three penalties and added the extra points to one try which gave him a personal tally of 11 points in their 21-15 win.

Kandy Sports Club, CR and FC and Havelocks are the only unbeaten teams in this year’s Caltex ‘A’ division league rugby tournament.
