The The third version of popular Kandy Night Races will bring the racing thrill to hill capital with "Kandy Speed @ 2014" showcasing Sri Lanka's top drivers and riders in action today at the heart of Kandy city.

The night races will had the timing sessions yesterday and the main races will run from 8.00p.m. today till late night. A special traffic control plane will be worked off at the time of races, minimizing inconvenience to public in Kandy. The organizers have arranged ample spectator areas and vehicle parking facilities for the expected huge crowd.

The event is organized by the Carlton Motor Sports Club (CMSC) in conjunction with the Kandy Off-Road & Adventure Club (KORAC), Asian Motor Racing Club (AMRC), and the Sri Lanka Association of Racing Drivers & Riders (SLARDAR).

The races will start off opposite the Kandy Police Station and will run past the Police Quarters, the Bogambara Prison and the Kandy Fire Brigade before coming past the Central Market, Torrington bus stop and the Park back to the finish line, covering a total of 1.1.km distance.

"Kandy Speed @ Night 2014" is a tarmac road race meet which inscribed in the National Calendar of Sri Lanka Automobile Sports for the year 2014.

CMSC president Dinesh Jayawardana said the Kandy Speed @ Night 2014 is a part of three-year plan to bring Fomula races to Sri Lanka and they will bring night races to far regions of the country in future.

Jaliya Jayasekera, the secretary of CMSC revealed that there will be three to four main spectator areas apart from the VVIP stand near starting point. "Other spectator stands have been arranged close to Bogambara ground and Wales Park in front prison walls, besides Kandy Fire Brigade and near Police quarters . There will be four entry points to spectator areas. This new Kandy tarmac circuit will be provided with maximum safety arrangements. Sand bags, form bundles and tires will be paved besides the corners and a 10 feet high chain link fence will set up in unprotected spectator areas close to the track.

Speaking to Media, champion driver Ishraq Wahab said that a night race in a city centre gives lot of glamour to the sport and it is easy to attract sponsors and spectators in order to take the sport to the next level. The previous Colombo and Kandy night races have been a great success. Night races has become one of the biggest spectator attractions over its short history in Sri Lanka and it offers a unique experience for both competitors and spectators. A street circuit needs lot of discipline when it comes to competition and will highlight the difference between a good driver and a great driver," Ishraq explained.

The champion rider Maduranga Kaldera said that the night races are more challenging when compared with day events and is a great opportunity for local riders to improve their maneuvering skills.

This year's Kandy Speed @ Night will feature 10 motor car and seven motorcycle events. The car events will include SL-GT up to 3500cc, SL-S up to 1500cc, Formula 1300, SL-H up to 1600cc, SL-A Mini 7, SL-N Ford Lazer / Mazda 323 1300cc, SL-N Ford Lazer / Mazda 323 1500cc, SL-N up to 1000cc, SL - S up to 1350 cc, Subaru Legacy up to 2200cc.

The motorcycle events will include Group 'O' over 100cc up to 125cc (4 Stroke), Group 'M' - over 100cc up to 125cc (2 Stroke), over 175cc up to 250cc (4 Stroke), over 175 cc up to 600cc (4 Stroke), Modified over 900cc up to 1000cc, Group 'SM' up to 450cc and Group R - Thoroughbred racing up to 125cc.
