Endorsing what they say is a call from their supporters, Kandy have decided to object to the appointment of referee Dilroy Fernando to officiate in their semi final Clifford Cup rugby match against Havelocks tomorrow at Nittawela.
In a statement to the Daily Mirror, Kandy secretary Mahesh Weerasinghe claimed that Fernando’s membership with another rival club CR and FC and his position as executive director of the Rugby Union along with his influential status in the Referees Society does not make him the ideal referee to officiate in the semi final.
President of the Referees Society Vimal Perera said they had no knowledge of the objections to Fernando’s appointment.
Fernando is one of two internationally recognised referees in Sri Lanka. The other is Nizam Jamaldeen.
