Kilinochchi under siege: Defence Ministry
The army has laid siege to Kilinochchi, the LTTE’s de facto administrative centre, while heavy clashes were continuing around its outskirts, the Defence Ministry said yesterday.The military claimed that in the weekend fighting in the Wanni region at least 120 LTTE cadres and 27 soldiers were killed.
The Defence Ministry said the troops breached the LTTE earth bund around Kilinochchi at three locations.
Troops of the 57 Division also launched two separate assaults on the earth bund, north of Puthumurippukulam and Therumurikandi.
The forward units of the Task Force 1 and 57 Division deployed in the Adampan and Puthumurippukulam areas has come under massive LTTE counter attack since Sunday.
“Troops have successfully withstood the terrorist onslaught and are now consolidating their positions,” the Defence Ministry said
It said several soldiers were killed and several suffered injuries.
The Army 57 Division in the Therumurikandi area captured a 1.2 kilometre stretch of the earth bund that runs along the A-9 road.
An army official said the fighting in the West of Paranthan, West and South of Kilinochchi and north of Kumulumunai in Mullaitivu had injured 80 LTTE cadres and 70 soldiers.
However, the TamilNet quoted the LTTE as saying that 43 soldiers were killed and more than 70 wounded. The LTTE had not revealed its casualty figures
