This was one of the reasons why the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (now by Mahinda Rajapaksa) was very popular then, at least among the farmers. Agriculture in Jaffna collapsed when the right wing United National Party government led by President J R Jayewardene introduced the open economy in 1977. This was one of the reasons for the growth of Tamil separatism and militancy in the north in the 1980s.
