The Sri Lankan government might stop import of food, which could be cultivated in Jaffna in war-affected north Lanka, Minister of Agriculture Development, Maithripala Sirisena, said in Karaveddi in Jaffna on Friday.“When we compare with the other districts, Jaffna farmers have to face lots of difficulties.
They have limited facilities. However, they are efficient. So we should appreciate their service towards the development of the country. Jaffna farmers have once again started to cultivate grapes. If they do it properly we could stop the import of grapes.
If production of some agricultural crops like paddy is increased, we can make the country self-sufficient in a few years,” Sirisena said.
In the 1970s, thanks to the closed economy introduced by the Sirimavo Bandaranaike government, the Jaffna farmer made a lot of money cultivating crops which did not need much water. This was one of the reasons why the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (now by Mahinda Rajapaksa) was very popular then, at least among the farmers.
Agriculture in Jaffna collapsed when the right wing United National Party government led by President J R Jayewardene introduced the open economy in 1977. This was one of the reasons for the growth of Tamil separatism and militancy in the north in the 1980s.
FUNDS FOR IDP CAMPS MAY DRY UP:
There has been a good response from international donors to the needs of the refugee camps in north Lanka this year, but indications are that, in 2010, donors will want to fund resettlement schemes in the refugees’ original habitats rather than refugee camps.Neil Buhne, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Lanka, told the UN IRIN news service that the Common Humanitarian Action Plan in July had identified funding requirements of about US$270 million for 185 projects and that the donor response to that had been “pretty good”.
