The Large Hadron Collider

Our understanding of the Universe is about to change...

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a gigantic scientific instrument near Geneva, where it spans the border between Switzerland and France about 100 m underground. It is a particle accelerator used by physicists to study the smallest known particles – the fundamental building blocks of all things. It will revolutionise our understanding, from the minuscule world deep within atoms to the vastness of the Universe.

Two beams of subatomic particles called 'hadrons' – either protons or lead ions – will travel in opposite directions inside the circular accelerator, gaining energy with every lap. Physicists will use the LHC to recreate the conditions just after the Big Bang, by colliding the two beams head-on at very high energy. Teams of physicists from around the world will analyse the particles created in the collisions using special detectors in a number of experiments dedicated to the LHC.


There are many theories as to what will result from these collisions, but what's for sure is that a brave new world of physics will emerge from the new accelerator, as knowledge in particle physics goes on to describe the workings of the Universe. For decades, the Standard Model of particle physics has served physicists well as a means of understanding the fundamental laws of Nature, but it does not tell the whole story. Only experimental data using the higher energies reached by the LHC can push knowledge forward, challenging those who seek confirmation of established knowledge, and those who dare to dream beyond the paradigm.

Actually its a historic moment in the world of science today coz many scientists, journalists are gathered and so much of computing power are been used for this experiment but don't think most aren't aware or bothered to understand what's going on :rolleyes: :)

It's hard to say man..
I mean in this modern age these kinda info is easily accessible...
but still ppl tend to ignore these kind of important scientific milestones just bcoz either they think it is too complex for them to understand or bcoz they simply dnt give a damn..

Have you watched the movie Wanted. In the last scene Anjelina Jolie bends a bullet to go a full circle. This is like that. They accelerate protons and keep them going in a large circle. As they move on the protons gain more speed.

A proton simply has a weight and a positive electric charge. So what they are basically trying to do is to separate the weight and positive charge out of the proton. So they have to break the protons. You cannot break a proton by smashing it with a hammer! You have to make protons smash together really really hard.

At the end of their journey protons coming from two directions hits together and breaks up further.

(A proton surely has a positron in it. I believe that this could make antimatter and devour the earth from inside out!)

This is a very crazy idea!

I hope they would at least find a new source of energy!

They can leash a particle until they have an electric charge. When they collide protons, they expect to split out (knock off) bosons out of it! The massless positive electric charge will dissipate as radiation and the remainder (just mass / empty weight) can make a small black hole and devour the earth from inside out!

    i really think they will not tell u even if they are 100% sure it will cause a black hole that will destroy earth. this is the thing i hate about scientist and government... they cannot be trusted.
