Dear Sri Lankans and all the music lovers,

Before I start let me thank and appreciate the work of the webmasters and the team of elakir.com for putting up a website for all the music lovers. You give all the Sri Lankans all around the world a chance to enjoy the new Sri Lankan music.

To day how ever, I personally believe (I hope most of you will agree with me) that we are loosing our true identity of our Sri Lankan music. I write this letter with so much regret after listening to some of the new songs that has been released by so called new bands that pop out every single day and what they have done to music.

Even though we come from a small country, which I believe I don’t have to remind you has a history, culture and a tradition that no other country has. All this pride and heritage is passed on to each of us no matter what race, religion or where we live in. Even though we have so much heritage we have to remember that all this comes to us with so much responsibility. No matter where we are what we do (dance, music, education) we have to remember that we represent some thin; the most important, that we are Sri Lankans. So as musicians or music lovers we have to save our Sri Lankan identity in music.

In this post I would like to draw your attention towards the song “WARAMATHI” an attempt (with tragic results I should add) to make a “cooler” version by some amateur artists. Waramathi is a traditional Sri Lankan master piece that was written to bless the Sri Lankan king.

I hope you would agree with me with the fact that, a song to keep going on for generations that it must have some uniqueness and special quality.

If you take a closer look at the lyrics you will understand how carefully it has been written and how meaningful it is. Therefore when we consider those facts I believe the whole idea, purpose and the true identity of the “Prashathi” song has been destroyed when it is being HIPPED HOPPED and RAPPED up.
It is more regretful and heart breaking to understand the damage done to our own music that we should be preserved by our own people.

If I’m not mistaken the producers of the song and the writers didn’t even had the faintest idea about the “Prashathi” song it self they used or about rapping.

As far as I know the most basic concept of rapping which most of us has misunderstood is not saying (rather jabbering) some “ENGLISH” words at a faster pace. NO. The basic idea of rapping is to add a meaningful counterpart for a song, to give more background information or a meaningfully relevant accompaniment to the song. Rapping is not item to be “COOL” or “Gangsters”. Therefore a rap in a song would add more meaning to the song; a story would be told that could not be sung. As you can see it would make perfect sense.
But it doesn’t appear that any Sri Lankan rappers nor the musicians of this song followed any of the basics as the lyrics rapped in the song does not have any thin to do with the meaning of the song. Its regret full that bands like Centigradez , BnS still try to copy others music and do the damage even after being in the filed for along time.

Even today as I’m no expert I still debate on the fact, if a song should be meaningful, melodious or have both aspects in it. There fore I’ll leave it up to you.
I would like to know how you feel about this so feel free to comment back on this telling me your opinion. I don’t care if you agree with me or not.

Thank you! May the triple gem bless you!

Ps: I did not post this to represent any one, any company or any group with any intention of bringing harm or insulting any one.
