    කාලකන්නි මාලිමා ජෙප්පෝ LGBTIQ සාපෙ වැළදගත් රටක් ලෙස ලංකාව ලෝක ප්‍රසිද්ද කරයි 🤌

Sri Lanka recently embraced developing LGBTIQ tourism, which, spearheaded by EQUAL GROUND, the LGBTIQ advocacy group, is a landmark move in the country’s tourism policy. The country is on the path of developing LGBTIQ tourism, and the initiative aims to create a positive and inclusive environment that enables LGBTIQ travellers to feel safe and accepted. This will help the country gain access to a new market, which, in turn, will help diversify the country’s tourism offerings and enhance its position as a global tourism destination.

    Diversity and Inclusivity in Tourism

Sri Lanka’s tourism sector has long been focused on traditional tourism such as beach holidays and cultural experiences. However, the partnership with EQUAL GROUND is set to evolve Sri Lanka’s tourism industry. This initiative is not only progressive but also commercially strategic, aligning with the global rise in LGBTIQ tourism.

The project’s goal is to make Sri Lanka a leading inclusive destination by embracing diversity and ensuring the safety and rights of LGBTIQ travellers. Sri Lanka Tourism is facilitating the development of a network of stakeholders, including hotels, tour operators, and guides, who will be trained to understand and serve the specific needs of LGBTIQ visitors.

Promoting Sri Lanka on the Global Stage

Sri Lanka’s participation in international tourism fairs and global LGBTIQ travel networks will ensure the country’s increased visibility within this growing market. By collaborating with EQUAL GROUND, Sri Lanka aims to tap into a high-spending and loyal customer base. The LGBTIQ tourism market was valued at over USD 320 billion in 2024 and continues to grow at nearly seven percent annually, with projections to continue its expansion through 2033.

    Challenges to Overcome

Despite the positive steps, challenges remain in the path toward inclusive tourism. Research by EQUAL GROUND suggests that social stigma and lack of awareness continue to affect the local acceptance of LGBTIQ individuals. Additionally, colonial-era laws that criminalise same-sex relations still exist on the statute books, creating a complex legal environment. While these laws are rarely enforced, the legal uncertainty can deter some travellers.

Nevertheless, the endorsement of this initiative by Sri Lanka Tourism signals a positive shift in the country’s commitment to inclusivity. For the LGBTIQ community, both local and international, these changes are a crucial step in establishing Sri Lanka as a truly welcoming and safe destination.

A New Market for Sri Lanka’s Tourism

Sri Lanka is recovering from years of economic and political challenges. This initiative to embrace LGBTIQ tourism is seen as an important step in diversifying the country’s tourism offering beyond the traditional sun-and-beach appeal. The move is expected to have a long-term impact on the growth of the tourism sector, attracting not just international visitors but also domestic tourists who identify as part of the LGBTIQ community.

By positioning itself as a hub for inclusive tourism, Sri Lanka is offering a unique value proposition for travellers seeking safe and welcoming destinations. The country’s effort to improve inclusivity could prove pivotal in shaping the tourism landscape of the future, as more travellers look for destinations that support diversity and inclusivity.

A Future of Inclusive Tourism for Sri Lanka

Embracing LGBTIQ travellers in the fold of inclusive tourism practice is a commendable sign of progress in the tourism sector of Sri Lanka. LGBTIQ tourists from around the world will find the island very appealing because this initiative will advance the country’s cultural diversity while also promoting LGBTIQ-friendly locales. Sri Lanka has strategically positioned itself to cater to the emerging global LGBTIQ market, and with its plans, aims to become a leader in tourism diversity.
