LTTE suffers heavy losses in Counter terrorist offensives in Mannar

Military reports indicate that LTTE terrorists have suffered heavy losses in the multi pronged counter terrorist offensive launched by army in the North of Mannar area yesterday (February 18).

According to the reports, army has captured several terrorist defences in the Northeast of Uilankulama, Pallaikuli and Parppakandal areas in the Mannar battlefront following heavy clashes .

In the Northeast of Uilankulama, troops engaged terrorists' defence between 5.30.a.m to 4.p.m and captured the defences line comprising of three bunkers, one strong point and about 600m long trench line. During the subsequent search, troops found 5 bodies of LTTE cadres , 2 T-56 machine guns , and 2 radio communication sets. Among the slain cadres 4 were female and one was male. Ground troops have claimed that 10 terrorists were killed and an equal number injured. Also, 2 soldiers were killed and nine sustained injuries in the clashes. The injured have been evacuated to Mannar, Vavuniya and Anuradhapura hospitals.

In the general area Pallaikuli, troops forayed a fortified LTTE defence around 6.a.m. and beat off the terrorists following hours long gun battle. Troops destroyed 4 LTTE bunkers, and a trench line. During the subsequent search, troops found two bodies of LTTE cadres, 3 T-56 weapons, 15 hand grenades, and 2250 ammunition used fort-56 riffles. No own casualties reported in this incident.

In a separate search operation conducted in the Adampan area, troops found one T-56 riffle.

In the general area North of Parappakandal, troops launched an attack at the LTTE bunker defence and captured 4 bunkers and a strong point around 2, last evening. Ground troops confirmed that 6 LTTE cadres were killed and at least 10 wounded in the incidents. No harm to the own troops.

According to the defence sources, troops have been able to gain the domination over the newly occupied areas and consolidating their defences at present.
