Star gazers across Australia have witnessed a total lunar eclipse, which occurs when the sun, the earth and the moon line up.
The earth's shadow started crossing the moon at 6:00pm AEST and completely covered the moon about 8:40pm AEST, turning it red.
Perry Vlahos from the Astronomical Society of Victoria says early cloud cover cleared just in time for observers in Melbourne to see the moon like never before.
"[It was] almost like a burnt-out shell of itself, with this coppery pink colour stretching up from the bottom," he said.
"We can still see it because a little bit of the atmosphere or a little bit of light from the sun is being bent around the earth's atmosphere so that you can see it."
Observers at Charleville's Cosmos Centre in outback Queensland brought chairs and blankets to enjoy the show, which was easily visible without a telescope.
The eclipse is the second total lunar eclipse for 2007.
