Shyamalee Priyadharshanee Perera, wife of SSP Vas Gunawardene who was remanded at Welikada Prison as a suspect of abducting and assaulting Nipuna Ramanayake, a student of SLIIT at Malabe is having luxury facilities in the women’s section of the prison state sources in the prison.
She has been given a luxury room and is treated as an executive in the prison say these sources. The luxury ‘apartments’ in the prison have existed for a long time and they are maintained for the use of those with high connections when they get remanded. The ‘apartments’ are compiled with comfortable beds, TVs, audio facilities, fridges and fans. The apartments are maintained by prison authorities as a hospital for women prisoners though ordinary female prisoners have never been there
A senior female office of the Welikade Prison has mediated in getting SSP Vas Gunawardene’s wife Shyamallee Priyadharshanee Perera the ‘apartment’ with super comforts in the prison. She had also accompanied the suspect from the court to the prison. She maintains direct contacts with several high officials in the government and she has unofficial powers in the prison say prison officers.
