A magnitude 5.7 earthquake hit near Vanuatu in the South Pacific at 9:54 a.m. local time yesterday, the U.S. Geological Survey said. No tsunami alert was issued. The temblor struck 95 kilometers (60 miles) west-southwest of Isangel, Vanuatu, the USGS said in an e-mailed alert. The quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometers.
