Aljazeera interview with President Mahinda Rajapaksa

Sri Lanka president rejects war crimes probe

Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapakse has rejected international calls for a war crimes probe into the final offensive against Tamil Tiger rebels last year.

In an interview with the Al-Jazeera television news network on Thursday, Rajapakse said he would not tolerate any outside review of a campaign that he insisted was solely aimed at "defeating terrorism".

"I don't want my internal matters to be inquired by any other country or any other NGOs. We will look after that," Rajapakse said.

A transcript of the interview was released by the president's office on Friday.
Rajapakse stressed that security forces had not targeted Tamil civilians and insisted that no non-combatants were killed. He added, however, that he was prepared to punish anyone found guilty of excesses.

Government forces defeated the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) by wiping out its top leadership on May 18 last year, ending a 37-year-old separatist struggle.

Sri Lanka has been under pressure to submit to an international investigation after the United Nations reported that at least 7,000 civilians perished in the final months of fighting.

"Be fair with us ... be fair with us ... don't treat Sri Lanka like this because we defeated terrorism," Rajapakse said.

Last week, Rajapakse named an eight-member "reconciliation commission" to study the last stages of the war and to recommend ways to avoid a return to ethnic conflict, but it had no mandate to probe war crimes.

I don't like the dictatorship government of the president. But I admire his courage & the way he takes on the foreign reporters who try to poke their dirty noses in our affairs. Yes he is not so fluent in his speech, talks more with his hands than his mouth, but his few words can send his critics crawling & red faced. Diplomacy & sweet talk is not for him, & he is not a respector of persons. Which other leader will ever have the guts to do such straight talking with the international media.
For me it is the pride of the country before politics.
    Well done sir.

What history you talking about?

Can history justify the deliberate action of dropping a NUKE on innocent civilians? How exactly?

    research machan

    Japan was not surrendering

nuke attacks made them to surrender that saved many life's

its not a good thing but they did it to stop the war

    2 Questions!

    1. So why aren't they, US doing it now they could have easily NUKED Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan and "save" many lives? do they feel guilty about NUKING Japan? They don't have to if that was done with right intentions!

On the other hand, you agree that even though they knew innocent human lives will be lost they NUKED it anyway to stop the war!

    2. So what IF SLA and Mahinda's govt. have done the same are you willing to accept it the same way you accept American's actions?
