The CID has taken away computers from General Sarath Fonseka’s office at Rajakeeya Mawatha Colombo.
Deputy Leader of the UNP Karu Jayasuriya who rushed to the office when the STF stormed the building earlier, told media that the STF had informed him they were looking for “army deserters” and “unauthorised weapons” inside the building.
The office of ‘Lanka Irida,’ one of the most popular newspapers in Sri Lanka was sealed by officials of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) today (30th) afternoon. The officials said they took the steps on powers they have been bestowed with under Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTC).
Mr. Priyadhrshana Yapa, member of the Editorial Board of ‘Lanka Irida’ speaking regarding the decision of the government to seal the newspaper office said, “This is an undemocratic move. Taking such an action immediately after a main election in the country is a very serious matter. Several media institutions have been pressurized after the presidential election. Certain media persons have been already made to disappear. This is certainly not favourable for democracy and good governance. We call upon all progressive masses in the country to come forward to take all democratic measures against such undemocratic moves.”
