Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse who called us traitors for proposing that High Security Zones should be gradually withdrawn in a systematic manner has now withdrawn them merely to fulfill his petty political interests says Leader of the group of Parliamentarians of the JVP Anura Dissanayake.
Speaking at a press conference held at the JVP head office at Pelawatta today (10th) Mr. Dissanayake said, “As the election campaign reaches the zenith fabrications, untruths, distorted news have been unleashed to the society. We would specially ask owners of media institutions and those who are heading such institutions to carry out their media campaigns on true facts.
On the 6th of this month Comrade Tilvin Silva held a press conference. This conference was attended by Mr. Ajith Alahakone representing ‘Divayina’ newspaper and Mr. Shamindra Fernando representing ‘The Island.’ Mr. Ajith Alahakone published a news item in ‘Divayina’ on the 7th based on the news conference. There was no distortion of the views expressed at the news conference. However, on the 8th a report of the press conference held on the 6th was published with a head line and this had been compiled by Mr. Shamindra Fernando. This news article with the headline was completely incorrect. Those who attended this press conference would bear witness to it. The news item carried a story that Comrade Tilvin Silva had not said at the press conference. We abhor and condemn such media practice. We requested a correction of this error but we are not satisfied with how it was carried out.
The latest matter is ‘Irida Lankadeepa’ has published a report regarding a statement by Mr. Sambanthan. This news has been published by Dayaseeli Liyanage. We inquired from Mr. Sambanthan regarding this matter. Mr. Sambanthan confirmed that he had not made such a statement. Also, this explanation was broadcast by several radio channels yesterday. It is clear that these are not the thinking of Shamindra or Dayaseela. It is a part of the operation carried out with the participation of several journalists who would do anything to create such fabrications.
You know that we, with the participation of several political parties and a large number of intellectuals, prepared a document as solutions for the issues of people in the Northern Province. It is not a secret document. In this document we discussed several issues including resettlement, disarming of armed groups, agriculture and LTTE suspects in detention. Several Tamil intellectuals too contributed in compiling this document. This is our vision regarding development of the Northern Province.
We discussed with TNA representatives. We explained to them regarding this vision of ours. They have discussed with their parties and have decided to extend their support to Gen. Fonseka. They held a press conference regarding this and explained matters.
Now the government is attempting to put forward made up stories. The government states we had promised to withdraw High security Zones and it is a treacherous act. We have a problem whether it is necessary to maintain High Security Zones as tiger organization has been completely defeated. Innocent people need not be detained further. It is inhuman.
