Some people say Sri Lanka is already a one! Hell. If Sri Lanka is a Buddhist fundamentalist country, would we have this much of problems prevailing in this little isle?
Some people say JHU is a Buddhist fundamentalist movement. People who say so, don't understand the true meaning of "Buddhism" or "Fundamentalism".
If you learn the true meanings of these two terms, you'll realize JHU is yet another political party, playing "Racism" as their trump card. (Just like LTTE, TNA, SLMC, CWC and all)
Simply described, "religious fundamentalism is blindly embracing the principles of a particular religious teaching"
So, Buddhist fundamentalism would be "blindly embracing the teaching of Lord Buddha"
My LITTEL KNOWLEDGE of Buddhism, suggest followings as SOME OF THE "basic principles of Buddha's teaching"
There are whole lot more. But, these are the only things comes to my mind right now. And, if I have made any mistakes, you are always welcome to correct it.
(BTW I'm in a mood of learning more about Buddhism. I mean the philosophy of Buddhism. Not the "Gatha" and "Bhodi Pooja Rituals". So, I may write more posts related to Buddhism in the future. So, keep your "stickers" ready, to label me as a Buddhist fundamentalist!!!)
In a Buddhist fundamentalist country.......
1) There couldn't be any room for "fundamentalism". Because, in "Kalama Suthra" Buddha taught us "Never accept anything as the truth, just because some religious leader taught so, or just because it was said in an old book, [and so on and son]. Believe it as truth, if only you yourself investigate the facts, and understand it as the truth by your own judgment" (Well these are not the exact English translation, but the idea is some what similar)
2) So, in a Buddhist fundamentalist country, you have the right to challenge the Buddha's teaching (Dhamma) it self! (But, you'll find it difficult to prove it wrong)
3) There are no races, ethnicities or what so ever. Only race on earth is Human race, and they are classified (for identification purpose, not for discrimination) as Bikkhu, Bikkuni, Upasaka, Upasika. (You translate that into English!)
4) So the concept of "Sinhala Buddhist" is nullified. You can speak Sinhala and live according to the Sinhala customs while being a Buddhist. But, you won't have special privileges for being a "Sinhala Buddhist".
5) There are enough room for co-existence of multiple religions. Buddha NEVER taught to "kill all the non Buddhists, or convert them to Buddhism by offering money". So, in a Buddhist fundamentalist country there could be many more religions co-exist.
6) So, in a Buddhist Fundamentalist country, you can embrace Islam, Christianize or what ever you wish, if you feel un happy being a Buddhist. You won't be killed for changing the religion, or offered money to change back to Buddhism.
7) You are not superior to any other human being simply because you have embraced Buddhism as a religion. You have to be enlightened with "Chathurarya Sathya" (Or, four noble principles) to be "superior" to other human beings. Otherwise, you are just a "human being".
8) No killing. Not even animals.
9) No stealing from others. You can't possess anything not legally belonging to you.
10) No "bad sexual habits". (Haah! No room for worlds oldest profession!!!)
11) No Liquor. Close all the bars and Wine stores. Cancel the license.
12) No Lies Please!. In a Buddhist fundamentalist country, no one can lie. Not even politicians!
13) Buddhist monks shouldn't wear foot wear. They should wear robes made of "panshukula" (The clothes used to wrap dead bodies) [That's bit harsh on monks]. Buddhist monks shouldn't posses money, or exchange money in any transaction. Mode of transportation for Buddhist monks is "walking". (Or else you have to learn "Erdi") So, No Mercedes Benz!!!
That's all "principles" that I can recall at the moment. May be you also can add a few as comments.
Well, it may go on and go on like this, but you couldn't find a one single "bad principles" to the society at large. (Well, may be for some people "No Liquor" is a bad principle)
