One of the suspects taken into custody in connection of the murder of a police constable has been reportedly drowned in a river in Bolgoda, Moratuwa, Police said.
A police officer claimed that the incident occured when one of the four suspects taken into custody who was taken to an island in Bolgoda to recover the sword used for the crime was returning.
He claimed that the suspect though in handcuffs had attacked a police officer with both his hands and a policeman along with the suspect had fallen into the river.
Both of them were rescued and taken to hospital, but the suspect was pronounced dead on admission.
There was no immediate independent confirmation on how the suspect had drowned.
The police constable was hacked to death when he accompanied his OIC to resolve a dispute in Modara Moratuwa in the early hours of Monday.
Last week a suspect in police custody died with claims that he jumped off the vehicle.
