After calling for a show of hands from the public and members of the SLFP attending the party convention in Colombo this evening if they wanted a Presidential or General election , the President said the views of the party members will be considered when deciding what to hold first.
There was anticipation that the President will announce at the convention this evening if he will go for a Presidential or General election first.
The President however noted that the government was not afraid to face an election adding that the opposition in the island was very weak to the extent that it was now “begging” for a candidate to contest the next election.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa also charged that the main opposition was operating with ant-national interests. He also said that there were attempts to divide the military.
Also speaking in Tamil, the President said that there are no minorities in Sri Lanka and that the government has achieved almost everything it had promised under the “Mahinda Chintanaya” election pledge.

I have no problem Sarth Fonseka becoming a president. But the problem is it is same people who screamed against him and shouted against what he did now are using him to come to power. Just imagine for a second a country run by a Army head, "who said SL belongs to Sinhalese only", and man who signed a document to give part of the country to a terrorist group being the prime Minister together with those crazy Marxists JVP idiots holding cabinet positions and Managla ,Ravi and Mano holding high ranking cabinet positions. I hope I will long enough to see that coalition!!!!! GOD BLESS MY MOTHERLAND!!!
what about being humble? Isnt general fonseka also trying to take all credit to himself too.? Why do people forget what the navy and the airforce and the president did to fight the war. All these people are part of the victory. No one man couldv done it by himself. If the president did not appoint general sarath and provide the three forces all political backing this wouldnt have been possible. At the same time president wouldv not been able to win the war if not for the military leadership given by the general too. I urge you people not to give credit to just one party. Also to all those UNP "patriots" who are now saying that general sarath is their hero... Have you forgotten how you mocked the great general. Have you forgotten how you mocked the battles and victories of the general. Have you forgotten how you went all over the world and declared that the generals army are was criminals. Have you forgotten how RANIL was in norway exactly on the day that we won the war. He was with EPIC SOLHEIM planning and comprising to stop the war? How do you people forget the recent history so fast. I solute the general for the great service he had done to our nation. I just hope that he wont join such a bankrupt hypocritical party as the united national party.

Shame MR shame! He showed once again his habit of not keeping his words [except war]. He only created a presidental election fever unnecessarily before two years prior to the general election. As the wind is blowing against him now he ate his words. Is this the importantant message he promised to announce on the 15th? Shame MR shame!
SF's name will be remembered for the war. But if he comes with UNP he will remembered for that more than the war. I don't mind if SF wins presidential election. I hv a feeling there will be a general election.
You should've treated citizens better rather than your family members. Then you will never face this situation and easily won general election with 2/3 majority. At least now learn the lesson and get rid of some of Rajapaksha's out of the scene. Also ministers like "Kudu Gemunu" whom is a disgrace to whole nation.

President talked very aggressively. First he and the ministers talked about a presidential election. but now they are silent. If SF comes to the game then definitely it'll be very difficult for MR to win.

The Country which was devided was united by MR. He gave a different dimension to the Sri Lankans. He brought all Sri Lankans together whether they are SInhalese, Tamils, Muslims, Burghers or Malays. SF was a great military leader. But who knew him before MR appointed the Commander of the Army. suddenly Sri lankens have forgot who led the War. its true that SF lead the army. those who reluctant to give a credit to MR should remember that even SF would not win if there were no JJ,Kamal,Prasanna,Shavindra and all the other commenders including Navy & Army who lead army at war. if all were not there Sri lanka will be divided already.

Now we can see the diference between the President and General. 'We are not afraid to for ANY election' said Mr.MR. Gen Fonseka left the post without considering 'POWER' as he could not agree with the Gov.Who is the real and honest man who loves the country?.
SF is An excellent soldier, but not a politician. RW and gang want to use his name to secure his post with backing of Norway, USA and other EUs.

Why are we such fools: Because the politicians are selfish and they want every thing for them self, also they were not taught (when they were young) how to reognise other poeople. SF should be proud that he won the first political war today. The president was scared to announce the election date today. Also I request every one to show some respect to the current president. MR cant b a new Dutu Gamunu as he is not brave enough to take the presidential challenge with SF... SF is more smarter than any1, he is d real patriotic person than any1 who clams as patriotic... so even if he joins UNP/UNA, v still can trust him than any1 else...
how things have changed, it was just a matter of time anyway. all the glory should go to president and forces for the war but that doesnt mean they can do anything and get away with it. we have to move on with our thinking.

What a terrible tragedy for our nation!. IF our leaders were more humble, this comedy of errors could have been avoided. Sarath Fonseka was the ONLY man who could have fought this war, for he is like George Patton, Bernard Montgomery etc. who have to, by nature to be arrogant to win wars. Churchill was a humble man, as was the King of England and the US President Roosevelt and gave the military men the flexibility they needed and did not take any credit for dereating the Axix Powers. Our nation has lost a very good man when SF retired; MR and Co. have lost a lot of good-will (they may not realize it just yet). But SF's name will be remembered for a longer time than all others combined. Why are we such fools?!
All those who attended the national convention wanted a Presidential election. All raised their hands. Alas!, MR asked when other presidents were reluctant to sacrifice even ONE year of their presidency period, WHY are all of you asking me to sacrifice two years?. Getting scared of defeat??. Even the SLFPers want him OUT, so that Mother Lanka will have a bright, corruption free, 10% commissions free Island.
Your Excellency, we thank you for winning the war againts the LTTE. But perhaps it is best to remind you that many Politicians including Hon. Ranil Wickramasinghe contributed for the success of winning the war. Thus it is incorrect to take the full credit. I am dissapponited to note the way things are happening in our country. It appears you have sidelined the war hero General Fonseka.
The people were expecting the decision to be announced with a 'roar' , why the delay?? people are waiting.
