Ollantaytambo is one of the most important towns of the Sacred Valley of the Incas in Cusco. It is the only place that preserves its old Inca urban design. It's the must "Stop" from Cusco to Machu-Picchu.
We drove from Cusco to Ollantaytambo - stayed in Hotel Pakaritampu - Sacred Valley for a couple of days, just next to the Railway Station. Then took the Vistadome train (approx $95 US one way- operated by Peru Rail - There are cheaper options too including a standard normal rail services) to Aguas Calientes - effectively the small township of Machu Picchu where we stayed for the night. It's from Aguas Calientes the bus services to Machu Picchu starts.
Aguas Calientes is a small township (It really means Hot Water - because there are hot springs in here) with lots of small market areas, mainly catering for tourists.
