Sri Lankan in Australia charged over accident

A Sri Lankan man, 24, has been charged after the car he was driving was involved in a fatal collision in Australia early yesterday morning. Police initially believed the incident was the result of drag racing, but later ruled that out.
Police said the drivers of a Suzuki and Honda Prelude were driving on Highbury Road, about 100 metres east of Middleborough Road, about 2.50am when their cars clipped each other.
The driver of the Suzuki lost control of the vehicle, veered off the road and crashed into an electricity box. His passenger, believed to be in his late 20s, died at the scene.
Yesterday afternoon, police charged Yohan Kumarge, of Chadstone, who was driving the Honda, with culpable driving. He will appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday. Kumarge was breath-tested and it is alleged he was double the legal limit.
All people involved in the crash are Sri Lankan nationals who are in Australia on student visas.
The driver of the Suzuki, also in his 20s, suffered minor injuries and was taken to The Alfred hospital in a stable condition. No charges have been laid against him.
The fatal collision came just two days after police launched Operation Ardent in Casey, in Melbourne's south-west, to try to crack down on hoon drivers. Five young people died in the area in two recent crashes at the same intersection. (The Age)
