In response to what residents of the Millennium City a venture of Ceylinco Group call cheating, Government has ordered the company to restore all facilities free of charge before April 30.
The residents of the Millennium City Aturugriya told the Daily Mirror that Deputy Minister Housing and Construction Geethanjana Gunawardene had ordered the company to restore free street lighting, maintenance and the 24 hour security free of charge before April 30. A committee comprising the members of UDA, BOI and Housing and Construction Ministry has been appointed to monitor the situation. They have also been asked to visit the housing scheme to monitor the situation.
Residents are holding a meeting to decide on a course of action. They claim they were promised free maintenance, such as collection of garbage and supply of cable TV, a free 24-hour security service, street lighting and cleaning of drains at the time they purchased the houses in the scheme. They complain that they were later asked to pay a maintenance fee of Rs. 1,250 per month for one zone while it varies in other zones. The payment scheme which was introduced a few years ago has been increasing annualy.
A resident who did not wish to be named said the promised cinema, super market and the shopping complex has not been provided. “I went to live in Atturugiriya from Bambalapitiya because they offered so many facilities but I am dismayed to find that none of those facilities are available here,” he said.
Another complaint was though users of the swimming pool were originally promised this facility free, fees are charged from the users. Residents say the company informed them in writing that a sum of Rs. 168,060 had to be spent monthly to maintain the housing scheme. It claimed the company would continue to maintain the scheme on a no profit no loss basis until a management company with controlling power was vested with the residents. They say the scheme never got off the ground They also alleged that the company had bought over some of the residents who were working hand in glove with the company.
