mobile phones with gps after having read what you all have said bout gps phones, man, maybe you should forget bout using a mobile phone, for one, your already on the internet, and know your way around the internet, so how come you couldnt find a working gps map of srilanka ?. the internet is so vast, but finding the right information is hard but you will find it. suggest you do a search again for gps maps for srilanka, forget mapsource and all that stuff, they simply dont work even with lots of tweaks. one person suggested garmin, and he/she is on the right path, response to 'someone can make alot of money making gps routable maps in srilanka,' has already been done, and i can point you in the right path to getting it working also. 1) google is your friend. 2) you need 2 things for it to work, except the phone with gps ofcourse, thats a program to decode the map data - in this case garmin mobile xt and a basemap of srilanka. 3) when you get those two, you need to have a memory card in your phone, backup all data on it first, 4) need the usb data cable for your phone, have only tested on nokia phones, N series and E series. 5) then you need to get a prog to unlock the memory card and the garmin prog to work on the phone, as if you dont, you cant activate your internal gps on your phone. 6) go read up garmin mobile xt user manual and watch your tube videos on same subject to get a feel for the program and its features. 7) you will find a incomplete garmin mobile xt program to begin with, with the map loaded and all, its no use, unless your gonna stare at it while your driving 8) find garmin voice packs on the internet, they have to 1MB and under for it to work, dont ask why files larger than 1MB doesnt work, havnt figured it out 9) now that you have it working, u need a destination to go to, input that in and it knows your current position, it will calculate the route for you. 10) please watch garmin nuvi, other gps navigation system videos on youtube to get some idea what its like, 11) some features of it, current vehicle speed, distance travelled, local weather for that city your visiting, auto route recalculation if you deviate from the chosen path. with voice navigation 12) need a car phone charger, battery drains fast, battery lasts only 3hrs for a 300km drive. ( not driving at the legal speed limit ofcourse) 13) no need for internet and there is no way the gov can track it or you, even if you have it on, as gps is foreign. u can always turn off A-GPS feature that relies on the internet only for the sole purpose of getting a quick satellite fix, of under 5secs. if its turned off, it may take 2mins atleast. 14) when everything is working, you need to download a prog called POI loader, free from garmin, again refer youtube videos on it. this is to add your own custom coordinates, routes etc. 15) as to finding the voice packs, search for complete maps, europe or any country and you will find voice packs in there for some, you cant install nuvi voice packs on mobile xt, as far as i can verify 16) to mark custom waypoints, google earth is your friend, learn how to make points and how to export them to cvs files, keep originals seperate for backup purposes 17) upload custom points using POI loader 18) you have to be a bit of a tech guy to get it working, first time it always never works, happened to me aswell. 19) the map doesnt show one way streets or street names ok, but it will route you where you want to go if you input the destination, 20) there is a way to get the street names onto mobile xt but that involves hours and hours of one by one waypoint creation using google earth. and if you did check, only colombo road names are shown for now, as of today, there are bout 600 road names around colombo, except fort, which i havent done yet. 21) another feature of gps, you will love this, speed traps, you can set it such a way that it will alert you when you approach such a point, 22) no use of gps maps if you dont mark points and share with people, check out wikimapia srilanka on google. you get the idea. 23) entering current location details while there is tricky if you dont have a quick input method, touch screen or full qwerty keyboard greatly improves the efficiency. 24) need a vehicle windscreen mount bracket for your phone, unless your going to hand hold the phone while driving 25) set up a pre-programmed key to load the prog so u dont have to go through the menus to load the prog everytime. 26) always divert to default home screen from current route map when its running when you pulled over for checkpoints/police, lesser they know the better for you and pray the phone doesnt speak 'speed trap 300m ahead' infront of a cop, then you cant give a excuse to them. lol 27) dialog does sell gps units for Rs.100,000 +, that option is there if you have money to spend 28) please b careful when using this, i will not be responsible for driving accidents etc cause you were staring at the phone instead of the road. 29) and lastly, DONT follow the route exactly as it shown unless you want to create a whole new road with your name or go through someones house when navigating by gps. 30) pay attention to the road at ALL times. you will never get lost even if you try now, as long as you have a destination marked. sure the road may bumpy, full of checkpoints, 100 foot steep drops ( just kidding), ill end it by sayin this bit - 'there is nothing you cant achieve if you put your mind into it' limitless possibilities. 27) good luck folks.
