    Hi hi,

Am looking for a mobile phone with GPS.

    Any reccomendations ? :)
Nice if u can share ur experience - good signal reception or bad ?
Also have u used with google maps ?

Price preferably < Rs. 50k. somethig more, must see. :P

Would I need defence ministry approval to use a GPS phone here in SL ?

    thanks!

GPS hondai machan... but i dont think there are satellites near Sri Lanka to support that feature...
and i've also heard that GPS phones cannot be imported (i know there's a lot of GPS enabled phones already in Sri Lanka) to Sri Lanka because LTTE bastards can use them... but hopefully after the war is over the ban will be lifted... :)

I am using a GPS phone. But it is useless in Sri Lanka
    1. there are no proper maps.
    2. no proper road signs.
    3. Charge your internet connection when loading maps.
    4. Battery consumption is extremely low when you switch on the GPS

I dnt think it is true... Well N95 and N96 are GPS enalbed phones. They are easily available in Sri Lanka

Nope in Sri Lanka there are no proper maps. No proper street names.. only satalite maps are available which is the same as google earth...

But I have checked the accuracy is quite good..

    good.
theres no GPS-Calibrated maps for any navigator software for srilanka.
garmin got southeastern asia maps but not sl (all info frm google)
basicaly no street names or addresses which you can navigate to with GPS help

Read the discussion for requesting nokia maps for srilanka
    http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/discussions/board/message?board.id=navigation&message.id=9785

someone can make good money if he/she can make navigator system for mobile diveces to work in srilanka

    Hi,
Attached pic shows some where around bamba flats as seen in google maps - map view.

(Sorry pic quality very poor . Google maps was running in a SE k750 and was snapped in a hurry and sent over. In the phone itself the map and text were quite clear).

Alas, as u say, it is not navigatable but perhaps sufficient just see ur location.
Well in colombo city, still some small roads missing, amd other places even just outside, roads and names not in google maps yet :( . Hope things will improve in the future.

    I would like to know:

In the GPS phones u mention and that u r using, will I be able to see my position *marked* on the correct place (in the correct road :) ) in a google map view as shown in the pic (in the pic there is no marker).
Assume there is software shipped with the phone or 3rd party software to do this? i.e. interface phone gps rcvr to google maps - map view ?.
(Didn't get time to digout a detailed review on the gps features of the phones yet in the net)

    I ask bcos two reasons:

-once I saw a s/w running on a laptop connected to a gps receiver, that showed only the google maps satelite view only of the neighbourhood of ur position without any indication of the exact spot - one had to buy the pro version of the s/w for that feature.

-couple of years back saw a s/w (laptop connected to gps rcvr) that showed real time navigation while driving around and was following a pre traced route. (no map). When there is tree cover accuracy dropped to abt 40m and with parellel adjacent roads one could not say whether in correct road or not! Of course clear view of sky gave abt +/- 10m. Heard accuracy will depend on the clear view of sky as well as the chip used in the gps rcvr/gps phone.

Btw a friend mentioned India has launched a gps waas sat. Supposed to increase accuracy very much. Don't know operating yet or signal receivable in SL. Anyone has any idea abt this or received a signal on ur gps phone or other gps rcvr ?

    thanks.
