Teldeniya Magistrate Rohan Jayawardena on Saturday remanded 28 persons allegedly involved in assaulting a Buddhist monk and forcing him to disrobe and wear a sarong at Panwila.
Among those arrested were 14 women and a teenager, Panwila Police said. The suspects had demonstrated opposite the Sri Munasingharama temple in Hatale, Panwila against an illicit affair between a woman and the driver of the chief incumbent of the temple on Saturday. As the chief incumbent intervened to sort out the matter, the angry villagers had set upon him, the police said. They had finally left him tied to a bus stop. The suspects have been remanded till July 3. The teenager had been ordered to be kept under the custody of a children’s home in Weragala, police said.
Additional police security had been provided to the temple and investigations were in progress, police said.
The victim monk had been admitted to the Kandy Hospital, police said.
