Five monkeys are facing arrest in a village close to Maskeliya for stealing valuables worth Rs.10,000 along with some food, police officials said.

According to a complaint lodged by the villagers in the area, valuables comprising a gold pendant, money and a bottle of liquor had been lost early last week, leading people to believe that thieves had entered the village at night.

After the women had complained of the missing items to their men, a few villagers had stayed up last Wednesday (13)

night in order to catch the thieves and hand them over to the police.

However, the villagers were surprised to find a troop of monkeys, swinging from one tree to another entering the village and going to the mud hut of a villager in order to steal some food. In a bid to catch them red handed, the villagers broke into the house only to see the monkeys escape through an opening in the wall.

Two villagers had marched into the Maskeliya Police Station the next day and demanded the arrest of the ‘criminals’ in order to retrieve their valuables and money.

“The villagers were very angry as they had lost some money, jewellery and food. However, monkey’s stealing food and items is a common occurrence in this area. They come most of the time in search of food. They are harmless creatures,” police officials from the Maskeliya Police Station said.

However, according to the police, the ‘thieves’ have not been spotted in the area since the day they were discovered by the villagers
